Commenting on: ATI FirePro beta driver 8.76.2 coming soon with 20%-80+% performance gains across CAD and DCC apps

A new AMD blog talks about the upcoming release beta driver version 8.76.2 for ATI FirePro hardware. Highlights include:

  • More than 50% increase in performance for ATI FirePro V8800 on the 3ds Max subset of the SPECviewperf 10 benchmark, as well as a 40% gain on the Catia subset, a 20% gain on the Pro E subset and more than 20% gain on the overall composite.
  • Across the board performance increases for the entire family of current ATI FirePro graphics on the Lightwave subset of the new SPECviewperf® 11 benchmark, with the entry-level ATI FirePro V3800…

When can these the new FirePro cards be used by the Maya Professioanl? Well, not anythime soon. I was considering buying the almighty V8800, impressive value and performance, however I had to change my mind after reading the advice from Maya Professionals on the web, simply put, "stay away from this card". I was only searching for results on the V8800, but it seems the problems extend to other FirePros. The main complaints are, and not experienced in other professional GPUs: Blendshapes are not usable, ncloth cache is not playable, UV editing is unstable. These problems were present on the latest driver update 8.72 from April 25th. Will they be addressed on the 8.76? I admit to have been a Nvidia user for long, and was hoping that ATI would have a compelling product at an exceptional price to make the switch, but for now, at least for Maya users, that isn't the case.
