For a while, it was feeling like the Radeon HD 4870 had taken the lead in advanced hardware over the FireGL line (CAD-optimized drivers and RAM aside). But today AMD updated its flagship FirePro workstation accelerator to offer the same technology that has made news in the Radeon HD 4800 series: 800 unified shader processors and GDDR5 memory. But the FirePro v8700 also brings 1GB video memory and optimized drivers for CAD, digital video editing, and 3D visualization. It also adds twin Display Port connectors for the latest generation of hi-rez, hi-refresh,  30-bit color rendering displays as well…

Hmmmm...This isn't right at all! Fire pro are workstation cards, not gaming cards(HD XXXX) Means: WS cards have optimized drivers for OpenGL use, In DCC and CAD apps for ex.: Maya, XSI, 3DS MAX or Auto CAD, Inventor etc. This is where your card will "boost"! Having nearly the same architecture for ex.: Fire Pro v8700 is the equivalent of the HD 4870 with 1024mb. You can softmod Atis to WS cards, but not Geforce to Quadros(WS)etc. since the 6800 ultra(moddable to Quadro fx 4000). If you go for gaming never buy a WS card, cause they probably won't push your gaming experience forward. just google Guru 3d, Tom's Hardware etc wink Which means: The HD 4870 NEVER TOOK THE LEAD!!! It's depending of what you do with your card...
